Celebrating Platonic Affection

On Valentine’s Day, everyone has romance on the brain. But for those of us who aren’t in a relationship/don’t really want to, I decided to list eight notable friendships, with two from each of these forms of fiction: books, TV, movies, and Webtoons.

Book: 

Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, The Harry Potter series

I can’t talk about friendships without the golden trio! Harry, Ron and Hermione have their differences and arguments, but they are completley loyal to each other, and are willing to undergo many things for each other, including risking their lives time and time again.

Will Herondale and Jem Carstairs, The Infernal Devices series

 These two have a  Parabatai bond, and may be my favorite relationship within TID. Will is rude and foul to everyone but Jem, who is one of the few people he can truly be himself with. And Jem is patient and honest, and Will is one of the few people who truly helps him with his illness. 

TV:

Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, Sherlock:

Do I need to explain this one? Sherlock starts off as a cold hearted genius with very little understanding of human nature. And John is a bit of an adrenaline addict, but is also kinder and understands people. They help each other; Sherlock begins to become more human, and John finds a true best friend. 

The Tenth Doctor and Donna Noble, Doctor Who:

Dear goodness, I think they had the best Doctor and companion chemistry! They clearly cared for each other underneath all their bickering, and I’m still not quite over Journey’s End…😢
Movies:

Newt Scamander and Jacon Kowalski, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them

Hehe. These two were fun. I like how they reacted to the others’ situations, and how Jacob loved Newt’s creatures a lot, despite a few of them being loose in New York.

Hiccup and Toothless, How to Train Your Dragon

They have an ideal and adorable owner and pet relationship. And I like that their disabilities mirror each other; it strengthens their bond.

  1. I thought I was the only one who loved Donna and The Doctor! She’s one of my favorite companions but she’s so underrated. I loved her character, so spunky and mouthy, and a true equal to the Doctor since, even though she could never match him intellectually, she always found ways to make up for it and still be an awesome, empowering girl.
    Toothless and Hiccup are another fave of mine. I love pet bonds and this one just makes my day every time I think of it. They’re so in sync with each other and Hiccup worked so hard to earn that trust and loyalty.
    And of course I don’t even need to mention Harry, Ron and Hermione.

    I’ve been loving these posts as I’m such a sucker for bromance/womance. It still puzzles me how people always assume there’s something more to these types of relationships because, clearly, there isn’t. Not like that. And it should be celebrated because we have enough romantic relationships to last us a lifetime!

    1. I think Donna had the best charger development of the companions. I started off not liking her at all (she seemed so air headed and aggressive) but her development…she became a favorite just because of that! And I’m glad to see someone else like their friendship as much as I do!
      And yeah, I loved the Hiccup and Toothless dynamic. It was adorable.
      I know! I like good romance, but I feel like friendships aren’t celebrated enough.

      2. I can see that. I just felt like she was a little over the top. But her development was the best in the series, in my opinion. I just liked her character arc, and that’s why I got so upset with how she left the series. All that development, wasted…I’m just glad that she seemed happy in The End of Time.

      3. Well to me that’s just what made Donna Donna, you know? She stood up for herself and didn’t take crap from anyone. She also established herself from the beginning as a strong girl and I really admired that.
        I was really sad to see her go, though. But yeah, nice that she was happy 😊

      4. True, true…Yeah, by the end of her first episode, I was liking her a lot; I mean, she just had the worst wedding day EVER, and yet she was able to pull herself together to save the Doctor.
        And I’m glad it seems she met a good guy. I can only hope her self esteem was able to boost up a bit.

    1. Yes! Donna and Ten were probably my favorite Doctor and companion duo, mainly because while I do enjoy a good romance, having every single companion fall for the Doctor is just…no. 🙄
      Yes! How could I not include John and Sherlock?
      And I agree! Yay to all platonic relationships! They deserve more love.

      1. I love them both as well, but I think my favourite would be Amy and Eleven, they were outstanding!
        Actually I think all duos were pretty awesome lol. It’s so hard to chose, I wish the companions didn’t have to leave.

      2. Oh my! How could I forget Amy and Eleven? They were clearly having so much fun on set and behind set too.
        And yeah, each duo definitely had their perks. It is hard to choose, and I wish they didn’t have to leave either.

        I so hate goodbyes and whenever a companion leaves or the doctor regenerates, I just feel so sad and emotional! :C
