My Latest Binge-Worthy Comics…

Well then. I have officially gotten hooked to four webcomics: Rise From Ashes, My Dear Cold-Blooded King, Winter Woods…and the most addicting (and underrated) of all, American Ghost Jack. I haven’t been so hooked on several comics in a long time; while I do enjoy a lot of webcomics, there are very few that I become addicted to, and either binge or seriously consider to do so. Counting these four, these include 9: Dr. Frost, Bastard.  Annarasumanara, Space Boy, and Cheese in the Trap. 

Rise from Ashes and My Dear Cold-Blooded King are much to early in their releases for me to review then, but once they go on for a while, I may. And once I catch up to Winter Woods and finish season 1 of American Ghost Jack, (alas! I have to make a Tapastic account to read season 2!), I’ll happily make reviews for them.

There’s a fair chance you’ve never heard of these before. Here are some pictures and a summary to see if any of them appeal to you:

Rise from Ashes: 

The living and the dead have coexisted for a millennia, overseen by the Red Crows, a conclave of mediums who have power over the spirit world. However, in the early twentieth century, change is afoot…and a coming world war threatens the balance between mortals and ghosts! In the midst of this upheaval, one small ghost merely wishes to be left alone, and haunt her abandoned house in peace. But even the dead can have a great destiny that calls…

There hasn’t been a lot of story yet (that I’ve read) but it has amazing art and music!

My Dear Cold Blooded King-

Born a humble peasant, Kihara Mei has lived simply day by day as a merchant in the capitol, and never assumed things would change. But, one fateful day would change the course of her life, when faced with a deadly challenge against dangerous royal assassins. Now, with the eyes of the dreaded Blood King upon her, her life of simplicity would now become a tangled web of secrecy, deceit, and desire.

Can I just say…after the plot twist in episode three, that I love the protagonist? She looks like the normal sweet female character, but…(don’t worry, it’s not a creepy plot twist, lol). Anyway, this has great art and music by Kenny! (The guy who does the music for Where Tangents Meet, Siren’s Lament, and some of unOrdinary’s music.)

Winter Woods-

A few thousand years has passed since an alchemist created Winter. He is now living with Jane learning what it means to be alive as a human.

I never expected to like this as much as I do. The story is pretty good, but it’s the art and characters that truly make this amazing. I’ve grown emotionally attached to most of them, even to characters I never expected to (I’m looking at you, Zoe.) The plot of Winter becoming more human through his interactions with Jane is charming, sweet, humorous and full of feels. But a subplot I find just as interesting, if not more so, involves the characters of Zoe and Adora. We know present day them fairly well, but I want to know how they met, and why Adora is able to stick with Zoe.

American Ghost Jack-

Young Ma Go-eun and her father are about to be evicted from the haunted house they’ve run throughout the years. But Go-eun is not about to let the park owner demolish their haunted house and her memories of her childhood and her mother. She resolves to go to the United States to surpass trials and get a million dollar cash prize awarded to those who can survive a stay in Ghost Jack’s House.

Oh my. This is easily the one I am the most addicted to. And sadly, only the first season is available for free on mangafox. The second season is only available on Tapastic, and you have to have an account to read it. (Sigh). Its many genres include paranormal, thriller, romance, drama, with touches of horror here and there. I can’t talk too much about this without giving away any spoilers.  But let’s just say it’s the most underrated on my list, and in my opinion, the best. Some say the romance reminds them of Beauty and the Beast, but while I can say a few plot points are similar, the romance in question reminds me a tad more of Howl’s Moving Castle. But overall, without comparisons, this is a unique comic, different from nearly anything else I’ve read, with amazing characters and gorgeous art.
