Halloween Creatures Book Tag

Thanks Mandy @ Book Princess Reviews for tagging me for this tag! If, for some reason, you haven’t checked out her blog yet, you should: she has a wide variety of book reviews and features, and is definitely one of the most unique book bloggers out there.

However, before we get to the tag, a quick announcement: the next two posts will not be my Traces short story series. Why? Because I’m a little tired, it’s a little slow to write thus far, and because I was hoping to get it finished by Halloween. However, we’re not even at the middle yet…so it’s pretty clear I can’t finish it by Tuesday. However, I do have another Halloween themed post in the works, so I won’t be done with timely content for now!

Rules for the tag:

Witches : A book or character that is magical:

I think this book kinda explains itself, right? 😉 If not, I chose this not only because of the total dream circus, but because Morgenstern’s writing is some of the most magical writing I have ever read.

Mummies : A book or character you can’t wrap your mind around:

I’ll just choose one of the assigned reading books I have right now: The Hot Zone. This is probably the scariest book I have ever read in my life. It chronicles the time in the 90s when there was an Ebola outbreak in the United States. It’s actually kinda terrifying (for me, because I have a weak stomach when it comes to this kinda thing.)

Vampires : A book, series, or author you can’t live without:

Oh gosh, too many to count. Let’s just say one of my favorite authors: Markus Zusak.

Werewolves : A book best read in the middle of the night:

This is the most recent (and one of the best) thriller series I have ever read. I loved these books, and can only imagine how frightening they are read at night.

Zombies : A book you picked up for the 2nd time/Continued after DNF’ing it:

Now, don’t look at me like that! I was very little when I started reading these, and the 4th book really freaked me out. It took me around two years to start reading this series again.

Ghosts : A book you easily predicted a twist or ending :

I have to agree with Mandy here. As much as I liked this book, I guessed the murderer way too easily. Thankfully, with the second book in the series, I had a harder time pinning down one suspect.

Frankenstein : A book that truly shocked you:

My friends all raved about the twist in this book, so I skeptically picked this one up. Wow, they weren’t exaggerating. I guessed tiny bits and pieces, but didn’t guess everything at all.

Skeletons : A book or character that chilled you to the bone:

Hmm…I can’t think of a book/character that I haven’t already said (if I hadn’t mentioned the series earlier, I would’ve said Billy Dent from the I Hunt Killers series. Gah. He was a great villain). So I’ll just say one of my favorite Webtoon villains.

Dongsoo Seon is definitely one of the best villains I have ever read. He is just brilliantly written and seems impossible to beat without feeling overpowered.

Ghouls : A book that left you hungry :

Whenever I read a Stoker and Holmes book, I just wanna eat all the food in them. Gah, it sounds so unique and yummy.

Goblins : A greedy character :

Ugh! Mandy stole another of my answers! I have to go with the majority of the cast of Six of Crows.

Devil : A dark, evil character:

I’ll just say another of my favorite Webtoon villains.

I think it says something when the readers of Dr. Frost, which consists of people who typically love villainous characters, hate this guy’s guts. He’s just…ugh. He’s awful, but is amazingly well written, a great character. He’s a villain we love to hate.

Grim Reaper : A character you loved/hated that died:

Um. Where do I start?

People who have read this know.

Scarecrow : A book or character that scares you

Let me just repeat, I am currently reading The Hot Zone, and I  can just say this book made me feel sick within the first chapter. I avoided it for a few days because of that.

The Monster Mash : Tag 3 or more people to do this tag :

Dude, this is such a clever way to tag people. Anyway, I tag:

    1. Yes! He has a couple. You can find a compilation if his first trilogy (which are all short) online as well. I’ve yet to start them, but I’m almost certain they have to be good. The book is called Underdogs.
Six of Crows took me a while to get into, but was so worth it. I think it helped that I read it as part of a buddy read.

  1. I love this tag and the puns in it! ^^
It’s upsetting to see how many people guessed who the killer was in SJtR… It just shows how incredibly predictable it was, especially since I was able to figure it out. Me, the one girl who never reads any mysteries or thrillers (up until recently). I haven’t finished the second book yet but so far, quite clueless still!
We Were Liars is one of those books that have me curious as hell… I need to read it and find out what’s so amazing about it!!
Awesome answers, Kate, and I’m sorry to hear there won’t be any Traces chapters soon. But definitely prioritize your rest! ❤

    1. Hehe…puns. Sometimes I like them, sometimes I hate them.
And ugh, of course after I published this post I had a better answer for that one…it was from this mystery book called The Cabin that I really don’t like, because it was predictable and dull. And since it was so dull, I find myself forgetting about it all the time. I could still predict SJtR, but The Cabin was so much more cliche…but I’m glad to hear the second book is keeping you guessing!
We Were Liars is a good book, but at the same time, it’s not one of my favorites. I don’t love the writing style, but I think it’s worth reading, if only for the plot twist.
I’m hoping Traces will be updated by either Tuesday or Thursday, we’ll wait and see! But I want to get the action going as soon as I can. So far it’s been a mystery, but I want to start making it more of a thriller…hopefully I can pull it off!

  2. Sorry for stealing your answers, Kate. XD And now I have to hurry up and scurry down all these answers for creepy books. I’m definitely going to be adding all the books you mentioned in the werewolves section. And Harry Potter scared you? I remember the movies did it to me too, so I can see it. Wonderful answers, Kate, and this was so much fun to read! 😀

    1. Hehehe…well, technically, I stole them, as you did this tag first. And oh my gosh, you MUST read them. I dunno if they’re your thing, but I know they were definitely mine. If you want a psychological thriller that is actually psychological, this series is amazing!
Don’t look at me like that! I was…what, seven, eight, when I first started reading Harry Potter….

      1. Ooooh, I’ll definitely have to!! I love a good psychological thriller, but so many actually forgot about the psychological part. Totally intrigued. 😀

And lol! XD I’m sure I would have been freaked out as well. Aren’t there creepy dementor things or like werewolves?

      2. Yeah, it includes some gore due to crime scenes, but the true horror comes from the details from the mind of a serial killer, and of someone who’s scared of possibly being a sociopath. It was absolutely fascinating, I could tell the author had done his research.

The Dementors were actually based off of Rowling’s depression and mental illness. That’s probably why they felt so eerily real and creepy.

  3. haha I scared by Harry Potter too- in fact every time I read the second one when I was a child I nearly threw up (I was just that squeamish 😉 ) And Night Circus is a brilliant choice 😀 I also was completely shocked by We Were Liars! Great post!

    1. Glad to know I wasn’t the only one! And man, I wasn’t quite that squeamish…I only got nightmares. Night Circus was just beautiful. With We Were Liars, I was worried because not only was the Internet freaking out, but my friends too…needless to say, I wasn’t disappointed with that twist.
