As I looked over my old lists, I realized something vey important; typically, I recommend books, TV shows, anime, and movies by genre. But I haven’t done that with Webtoons. So, to rectify my mistake, here are some great starter Webtoons from each genre! (Note, I’m only doing featured Webtoons. If I did discover Webtoons, this list would go on forever.) And I will include links!
Fantasy:
unOrdinary, Uru-Chan:
Link: unOrdinary
If you like superheroes, a hierarchy system, developed characters, awesome powers and fight scenes, and a layer of mystery, I highly recommend this one! However, the story is difficult to find…until episode 19. So this Webtoon is for the patient. But it’s worth it!
Hooky, Miriam Bonastre Tur:
Link: Hooky
This story has witches and wizards, tons of magic, developed and likeable characters, a prophecy, and a dark plot twist. What more could you ask for? This starts off cute and sweet…up until a point. But if you like Harry Potter or other fantasies, you have to check this out.
Slice of Life:
Saphie The One Eyed Cat, Joho:
Link: Saphie The One Eyed Cat
Calling cat lovers (or even…gasp! Haters!) everywhere! This comic will give you diabetes from how sweet and adorable this is. But it’s so worth it! It may not have a plot, but hey, it does have cute cats, side splitting humor, and relatable situations. What more could you ask for in a slice of life?
Snailogy, Snailords:
Link: Snailogy
Very rarely do you see a slice of life with gorgeous art. But even rarer is a slice of life that can be hilarious, but also tackles difficult subjects. Snailogy is a unique comic; it can go from funny and off the wall humor, to something very inspiring and touching. This is a piece of art you have to check out.
Thriller:
Bastard, Youngchan Hwang, Carnby Kim:
Link: Bastard
One of the most critically acclaimed Webtoons, Bastard deserves every piece of recognition it gets. It’s a near-perfect thriller, with detailed characters, an intricate, twisted storyline, and is guaranteed to get your heart racing from the suspense. If you love thrillers, what are you waiting for? Check it out!
S.I.D, Sadaham:
Link: S.I.D
This is a thriller more similar to shows like Supernatural or the X-Files than anything else. However, this is also a startling, interesting Webtoon about ghosts. It has jump scares (mild ones, though) twists and turns, and beautiful art. If you like mysteries with a healthy amount of the paranormal, this is for you.
Horror:
Chiller:
Link: Chiller
This is a comic made by a variety of artists. It has sound effects and moving pictures, all for a more immersive experience. And it’s terrifying. I had to drop it after a certain episode, I got so freaked out. But man, is it amazing. And if you enjoyed this, go check out Shriek.
Distant Sky, Inwan Youn and Sunhee Kim:
Link: Distant Sky
This is another comic that is known for its intensity and high stakes, as well as having a plethora of mystery behind its two leads. While I’m not as addicted as I used to be, this is still interesting and twisted. And the use of shadows and lack of color make this all the more suspenseful.
Action:
Nano List, Songah Min:
Link: Nano List
While I personally don’t agree with the 9.87 rating this has, I do think this is a fun, fast paced series, with great fight scenes and intriguing characters. This has cool, surprisingly layered characters, and has more going for it than the first two chapters show.
Rise From Ashes, Madeleine Rosca:
Link: Rise From Ashes
I don’t read much action, but so far, this is promising. It has great art, intriguing characters and gorgeous music. To top it off, the fights are well choreographed, and there’s a lot of mystery surrounding the ghost girl.
Science Fiction:
Space Boy, Stephen McCranie:
Link: Space Boy
While Webtoons does lack in the science fiction department, what they do have is great. Space Boy is a slowed pace sci-fi, with beautiful writing, art, and characters. What’s interesting about this is the world building; the technology is used a lot and so naturally that it feels real. If you love drama and science fiction, you have to check this out!
Gepetto, Jewon Yeon:
Link: Gepetto
Gepetto is very underrated. It has an interesting story and great art, but it is very slow. So, if you’re patient, this is so worth it! This story has androids, clones, amazing fight scenes, and mysterious characters. It also has depth, questions morals, and asks what it truly means to be human.
Romance:
Siren’s Lament, instantmiso:
Link: Siren’s Lament
Do not be alarmed by the massive popularity this has! Unlike many hyped pieces of fiction, Siren’s Lament deserves all the praise it gets. The art is beautiful, the writing is amazing, and the tropes are amazingly skewed. The characters feel very real. Even if you’re not a romance fan, this is something you have to read ASAP!
Miss Abbott and The Doctor, Maripaz Villar:
Link: Miss Abbott and The Doctor
If you need a break from angst and plot twists, this adorable comic is for you! It gives you all the warm and fuzzy feels, and Cati and Andreas are an amazing couple with so much chemistry! And their Victorian inspired society is so unique and well built. If you want happy, adorable fluff, this comic is one of the best out there.
Drama:
Annarasumanara, Ilkwon Ha:
Link: Annarasumanara
This Webtoon is one of the closest things to a masterpiece I’ve seen on the site. The art is unique and innovative, the writing is symbolic and metaphorical without being pretentious, and the characters are so developed. This feels like a fairy tale, and yet echoes real life and relatable situations. Please check it out, at least for the sake of the art!
Cheese in the Trap, soonkki:
Link: Cheese in the Trap
In a way, I feel that the titular cheese in the trap is actually the readers; we get trapped in this addicting and confusing story. CIIT feels very similar to real life; we never truly know what’s going on in other people’s minds. Sometimes this is a slice of life, sometimes a mystery. This may be confusing at first, but after season 1, it’s so worth it.
Comedy:
Bluechair, Shen:
Link: Bluechair
This comic is purely silly. It’s funny and insanely random, and interactive. If you want pure comedy, well then. I think this one is made for you.
ShootAround, suspu:
Link: ShootAround
This is the most unique zombie apocalypse story I’ve read. It’s a pure dramedy that can make you laugh or give you the feels. The main characters are a highschool basketball team, and they’re trying to survive the apocalypse. The humor is unique, as are the characters and situations.
An Honorable Mention:
Mystery:
This is the one area that I feel Webtoons needs to improve drastically. As a mystery lover, there is only one comic in this site that I feel fits this category, and that makes me sad. I mean, there’s not even a mystery section! I think most of you know what Webtoon this is by now, but here we go:
Dr. Frost, JongBeom Lee:
Link: Dr. Frost
Dr. Frost starts off similar to House M.D, except psychology. It explores different mental illnesses, and each arc involves the mystery of the clients’ problems. But it’s started to give off more of a crime drama/Sherlock tone, and I think it’s going well. This was my first Webtoon, and I think that if you are a mystery lover, you will become as addicted to this as I am.
Thank you so much for doing this list! They all sound so interesting!! I’ll be bookmarking this page for when I’m ready to start in on Webtoons 😁

Yay! Glad to hear that. It’s like, some of these I enjoyed more than others, but I was just choosing stuff that’s good for first time Webtoon readers. And cool! Lemme now when you start reading them!

I will! 😊 And that’s okay. It will still give me a good list of things to start with.

Great post! I haven’t been reading webtoons lately and I definitely need to get back into them. The art style of Hooky instantly caught my attention and the fact that there’s wizards is even better! I have chapter 1 bookmarked 👍

I didn’t realize you read Webtoons! Awesome! Which other ones (besides Hooky) have you read or started to read?

Not much, tbh! I’ve read a lot of Cucumber Quest and Ava’s Demon, though I’m not caught up with them anymore. (And Homestuck, if that counts?? 😂)

Oh, I think those are webcomics! (Never really heard of them). Webtoons is a site with a lot of translated manhwa and self published comics. But I’ll have to look those up!

Ohhh! I didn’t know there was a difference. Ok then, I guess I haven’t read any webtoons lol. (But I definitely recommend you check out Cucumber Quest!! The art is amazing and the story is a super cute and funny fantasy)

That’s okay! And I’ll check out Cucumber Quest once I can.

Well, I’m glad to hear that! I mean, they are free, high quality comics after all…and I clearly love them. Which ones are you interested in?

I am interested in Bastard and Doctor Frost as of now. They sound very intriguing.

Those are two of my absolute favorites! So I’m really glad to hear you say that. Lemme know when you start them!

Omg that makes me even more excited to start them! I’ll surely let you know! 😊

Yay! (Claps hands). Actually, Bastard just ended, and as it’s perfect binging material, I suggest you start with that. I tried rereading it one chapter at a time, but it didn’t flow as well as when I binged it. And Dr. Frost is just so hard to wait for the weekly update! (Although I do have a couple of top comments for it, lol)

That’s great! I don’t like waiting anyway! As for Dr Frost, I guess I’ll have to bear the waiting. I will look out for your top comments. 😊

Yay! Bastard is the PERFECT binge read. It keeps the suspense real 😉. And Dr. Frost is just so darn good. Really addictive. When I started reading it, there were only 75 episodes and I read them in three days (I would’ve finished it sooner, but I was on vacation and busy). Happy reading! And lemme know how you enjoy them.

Can’t wait to read them both! Omg, I guess I’ll end up binge reading both of them as well! Thanks again. I’ll let you know as soon as I start. 😊

No problem! Yeah, I tried to pick some new and old stuff to recommend. And which ones are you interested in?

I like all of them, really! Except for Bastard, S.I.D., Chiller and Distant Sky. They’re really not my thing 😛
Saphie the One Eyed Cat sounds too adorable for words, so I might pick that one up first. But all the others look equally interesting in their own way.
I trust your judgement and so I know they’ll be great ^^

Saphie the One Eyed Cat looks like the most adorable webtoon in the world! But yeah, I want to try them all when I get the time 😊

That’s okay! And oh my gosh, Saphie The One Eyed Cat is absolutely precious. One of my favorites. I mean, cats. And that’s cool to hear! I hope you enjoy them.

I’ve read some webtoons in the past but never got super serious about them… Not that I didn’t like them, it just happened that way.
Maybe that’ll change!

Ah, that makes sense. I just got lucky and found a super addicting one as my first Webtoon…and maybe it’ll change this time! Good luck
